Microsoft, Apple, Sony and Acer will announce the Windows 10 consumer version in a conference call on Thursday, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
The first consumer edition of the OS will launch in the fourth quarter of next year, with a new, more powerful version coming later, the sources said.
The new operating system will come with a range of features including the ability to download apps and games, which is the first step toward enabling a universal Windows app store.
It will also allow users to run their own apps on devices running the new OS.
Microsoft is not expected to announce a price or a release date for the consumer version, but its partners are expected to begin selling it at the same time, the two sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Microsoft and Apple are the first companies to announce the consumer release of Windows in a public way.
The company said last year that it planned to release a Windows 10 version in the third quarter of 2019.
Apple is not due to release its own version of the operating system until late 2019, although the company is expected to launch a new version of its OS in the second half of 2020.
